Also many species are labeled Valonia and that is only one of the species we are dealing with. With Valonia, the smaller ones can be popped inside the tank as they don't have mature gametes yet. However, with other species that have a smaller thallus, this won't work because they are smaller naturally. (BTW, emerald crabs have to pop them to eat them don't they?;D)

inside the vacole of valonia is 99% fluid and 1% extracellular material like chloroplast bodies, but no spores. popping isn't any more reproductive than toothbrushing GHA from inside the tank, all parts of the organism are progenerative and its fragmentory reproduction thats occuring. not sporulation. If it were my tank Id remove the rocks from the tank, treat in a 50 50 bath of peroxide in another container for two mins, and melt it off harmlessly. Have done it many times, valonia and all other algaes are very easy to beat now that we've perfected this method of treatment.

this isn't mean to call out peroxide haters lol, Im just stating what I use that always works to keep my tank free of all pests regardless of nutrient levels, not having to chase perfect params was the best advance in reefkeeping since the pico reef heh

I never dose the whole tank, just treat removed rocks, rinse, and place back free of pests.

H2O2 is a powerful oxidizer. It would definitely harm your zoanthids.

So I guess that method could only be used with rock only that have no corals or other life on there...

I dip zoas in a peroxide dip without issue. But not a 50/50 mix. I use 3 parts water, 1 part peroxide
