so i was just sleeping in bed and then i heard this like like popping noise, sounds like its coming from my reef, lights are off except for my moonlight, i have heard it the past two nights and i have no idea what it is, ive heard it only once during the night but theres probably a chance that this more than once.

I dont know what it is, weather its a piece of equpiment or what but i kind of want to know what it is

any ideas, also i dont think its a mantis because why all of a sudden would it be doing this now after being in the tank for 7 months, but whatever it is deffiently sounds like its coming from the reef

pistol shrimp maybe? maybe he just got big enough now for you to hear him or maybe a mantis just grew big enough for you to notice? or maybe something is loose on your skimmer? or one of your pumps? or maybe a fish is jumping up and hitting your light? or a crab is moving some rocks? or maybe it is something trapped in your filter or sump whatever your running? idk those are just some thoughts...

it could be a rock trapped in your filter. everyonce in a while it hits the impeller and POP

it could be a mantis, and it would explain a few missing chromis you had... Just a suggestion, try a red light on the tank at night

Certainly need more information – when you approach the tank does it stop? Have you made the house quiet during the day and listened for it? When it pops is it rhythmic or sporadic?

My knee jerk was a shrimp as well, but since we are dealing with electric and water my antennas perk up a little and the thought of more scrutiny becomes warranted.

Do you have any pumps that kick on at night? - I like the thought posted above of something being sucked into a pump and kicking around a bit

if it is a mantis are they near impossible to catch?

    i have a cleaner shrimp

funny thing about the skimmer its a HOB skimmer, i had it turned off for 2 days so everything was really quiet so as it makes some noise, and thats when i started to hear the popping noise, now that the skimmer is running good again the popping noise came back last night

only filter i have my HOB skimmer and i dont have any rocks that would be light enough to get picked up by the current

thats true, i had never lost anything up until i got the chromis, i purposley left one of the chromis in there for the inverts, saw my emeraled crab and hermits working on pretty quickly, and i never saw the body of one missing chromis, one got eatin by my bubble, and the other i was able to net out

i have a blue moonlight thats on all night think that would work just as well

i was concerened enough about the popping noise last night so i did go up to the tank shortly after and it stopped i didnt hear it the rest of the night but i was passed out so i couldnt really tell. The other nights that it happened i just ignored it. And i think its probably sporadic it was just a real quick pop

only thing that inverts that i could think of doing something would be my emerald crab

no pumps that come on at night, i have a really simple setup, just a HOB skimmer, vortech powerhead, and tek light, and thats it, the lights went off about half an hour before the popping noise, and it was just a real loud quick pop

but i now no its deffiently not the skimmer because the popping started when i had turned it off two days ago and continued last night when i had it on again

My scotts wrasse will make a popping noise from the tank, :p ticks me off at night. This is normally only towards morning and evening when lights are just on and off.
