Clownfish make a clicking noise with their mouth also. I think it is rare for it to be heard, but it does happen.

my cardinals make a clicking noise with their mouths also. For a while I was freaked that I had a Mantis but realized it was the male cardinal showing off his mouth to the female in hopes she would let him carry her eggs..uber fascinating

For $90 its not worth the risk, IMO. The wrasse would need to be significantly larger than the mantis to kill it, otherwise I would put my money on the mantis killing the wrasse during confrontation. Cephalopods are known to eat mantis shrimp as well but I have seen several videos of mantis shrimp attacking and driving off octos 3-4 times their size in the wild.

I doubt it is a mantis shrimp though. I can't imagine it living in your tank for 7 months and your just finding it now.

I have two Ocellaris but haven't seen them do anything like that, but it's possible I guess. There was very little info on other's hearing their cardinals, but mine are def clicking. The male will flare his lower jaw and puff up his mouth and dance around the female clicking like a madman... and she just looks at him like he crazy.. so it's basic male/female behavior :)

and thats exactly why im still not 100% sure its a mantis because like you said why after 7 months would it just now start making noises

i noticed my clowns were in their sleeping spots and swimming in their normal position so now im doubting it was my clowns

im hoping it happens again tonight

If this is only at night, maybe your workhorse ballasts are popping or making a clicking noise from cooling off? Dunno if that is even possible though, hope you find the issue.
