I've been hearing strange popping noises from my tank for the last few weeks now. It only seems to happen once the daylights turn off (actinics on, or all lights off). It's like a snapping / popping noise, and has me rather disturbed.

I only started to hear it once I added my piece of frogspawn - the dude I bought it from said he had a few pistol shrimp on the same tank, and they were very tiny. I didn't see any shrimp in the frogspawn, and the guy disturbed it and made the heads shrink so I think the likelihood of one of the pistols stowing away would be slim, but that's all I can think of. I have looked around and do not see a pistol shrimp at all either.

The tank has no leaks, seems to have no structural problems, the stand is very strong, etc.

I'm wondering if I should replace the tank, as a broken tank with 30 gallons of water on the floor would not be good at all. Any ideas anyone?

Wonder what the likelihood of getting a goby to pair to get it out of hiding would be.

I don't care if it's a pistol, it's just weird I've had the tank up for around 4 months now and haven't heard it until a few weeks ago. I just can't imagine it stowing away in the frogspawn, it must be very tiny, but yet the popping is loud.

I agree sounds like a pistol shrimp. Your tank will be fine. I hear the same popping in my tank. I have a pistol in my 135g reef tank. If you want add a goby (pink spotted, or a watchman or yangshi shirmpgoby) and they might pair up. Its cool to see...I have a pink spotted one in my tank with my tiger pistol

they are mainly nocturnal in my opinion. I do see it clearing out its den at times during the day but I only hear the popping at night.

I dont think it matters much with the type of goby as long as it is a shrimp goby It may or may not match up. I was very lucky...I had a pinkspotted goby in my tank when I finally found a pistol shrimp. I added it and by 2 days it paired up..and I have 135g tank with about 160 pounds of rock

They are mainly nocturnal, yes. But they don't really sleep, ever. Night time is when all the bad guys go away, and most pistol shrimp are supposed to have poor eyesight, so the darkness doesn't effect them.

We have a very decent sized Tiger Pistol, and we bought what is called a "Pinkbar" goby or "Aurora" goby, also known as the Shrimp Goby. We bought it on a whim, because we wanted a Yellow Watchman but decided to risk it. The goby and shrimp paired up on their second night with each other.

Very cool. I'll see about a goby then. I don't really care if it's a pistol, I just would feel more comfortable if I could see the little guy so I know it's not my tank preparing to come apart.

if it only happens at night I wouldn't worrie about your tank coming apart. If it was your tank or equipment then it would happen day or night. Unless there is a faulty timer or somthing of that nature( but then you would probalby hear it from timer not tank). "Don't worrie about nothing and then there will be nothing to worrie about" that is my own little quote.
