I have a porcupine puffer that I've had for about 7 months. He was in a 45 gallon tank by himself for 6 months where he did fine... very active and ate a lot. I put him in a 75 gallon tank about 3 weeks ago since the 45 was too small for him and now he's acting strange. He's always laying at the bottom of the tank, he barely swims around anymore and he barley eats. The water chemistry is good as I am very keen on taking care of my tanks. Any suggestions as to why he's acting so funny in a new tank? Thanks

Did he inflate when you moved him? If they fill with air instead of water it's hard for them to release it and can cause internal damage.

Maybe different tankmates, lighting or flow.I'm only guessing, but three weeks seems like a long acclimation period. Good luck with him,I hope he perks up soon.

Porcupine puffers don't do well with stress. How did the transfer go? Was it a scoop and drop or did you floof it up a bit?

When i set up the new tank, i put him in a bucket. I put about half of the old water (20 gallons) in the new tank and then it topped it off with fresh salt water. I slow dripped him for an hour and then dumped him in the tank. The water temp and salinity are the same as the old tank (75-79/1.023) and his diet is the same (fresh shrimp). The only difference now is the water volume

Fresh shrimp clams and scallops... my puffer eats better than I do!
No idea why your having such trouble, FYI, when I change water mine lays on the bottom and gets really dark. After it is all done he perks right up in a matter of minutes. He did have a difficult time when I first got him home from the store. Took about 2 days for him to relax. Not much help I know...
    Good luck
