Seems like a weird question, but I just got a 300w heater for my 125 and it is as tall as my tank. The instructions say to place it vertically in the tank but I can't! Can it be placed horizontally or diagonal and still work right? I'm assuming because it is a submersible heater it would not be a good idea to have it sticking out of the water

there is a difference between submersible and fully submersible . keep that in mind, if its only submersible you may just want to tilt it sideways and keep the top out of the water.
