    Alright...I've had it...
The inflow to my sump from my overflow box (via a Stockman standpipe) has been making an unfortunate gurgling noise every 5 minutes or for the past WAY TOO LONG. I've added a valve to the airline tubing that comes out of the top of the standpipe in hopes of being able to fine tune the amount of air entering the system, but no luck so far. There are no sharp turns in the inflow hose (it's the ribbed pool hose type) and it ends about an inch below the water level in a cylinder filled with live rubble that acts as a bubble trap. Still the gurgling persists.
Now I'm wondering what would happen if a punch a hole in the bottom of the pool hose to help release any air that gathers. Does this seem like a useful idea? Would I be helping at all or just adding more air and making things worse?
I'm really at my wit's end here...
    Thanks!

The problem here lies at the end of the "pool hose". Its supposted to be able to breath, if the end of the hose is under the water, its not breathing correctly. Im I making any sense? Luna

I agree with luna, i recenlty bought a euro reef skimmer and they state in the directons to have the return pipe above water level or the skimmer will surge, gurgle and have be difficult to adjust. If it still persists after that, run hot water thru your air line and clean the pump. I had to do this last nite to my pump and air line despite it being a month old to get the periodic gurgling to stop.

Really? I've heard so many times that you're supposed to keep the end of the hose BELOW the surface of the water so there's not a splashing noise. I'll try elevating the hose and I'll let you all know what I find.
Thanks very much for your suggestions!

A sponge or a filter pad at the end of the hose should stop the splashing noise. Even some bio balls in a filter sock should do the trick.

I have this gurgling problem and the end of my pipe is above water. Any thought?

I had the gurgling sound even with it above water. Try cleaning the air line and cleaning the pump. I did it and it stopped.....must have been a clog or something.

I used Tangster advice and ran my inlet to the sump from the OF to the bottom of the sump in a 1" line. I then enlarged the pipe to a 1 1/2" and did a U then brought it up to just below the surface of the water and I have no problems. Once you increase the size of the pipe you release all the pressure the water has.
Never thought it would work until I tried it. ;D
