Hey I was just browsing around and noticed ecotech came out with a new lens for there Radion unit that apparently increases the total light output by 23% and over 45% peak output JUST by replacing the lens.

So I was thinking that since the Radion use cree led's would it be possible to order the lens and mark where your led's need to go using the lens as a guide and use that 1 optic mounting your led's in a small pattern as opposed to using all individual optics like you would normally do on a led setup

Just curious as to everyones thoughts as I dont have much experience with led setup, I know the basics and know about led's but having never held a Radion in my hands I am curious if this is even feasible, or worth the trouble for that matter

Also it looks to me like the Radion doesnt mount the led chips directly to a star board like most led setups do, now I know you can buy the led chips seperatly but I am curious how the Radion cool the chips down, or how exactly the inside of that unit is setup as that may help me figure out how 1 would go about trying to use this new TIR lens

    Thanks in advance

Very creative, highly plausible idea! Try it! I bet it would work.

It's going to take some mad soldering skills... To get the stars clos enough, manage the wires well enough and keep the solders low profile enough. But if you can do all that and figure out a way to keep it in place. I imagine it would work much better than typical optics.

+1 on the mad soldering skills. The Radion LEDs are dense-packed and flush mounted on what appears to be a circuit board, laying on the heat sink. All of the LEDs (15, I think) fit in about a 3" circle. The lenses sit over the top of them, but not on them, as far as best I remember when replacing mine. The lense is a killer upgrade though. I think it is $30 well spent.

    Good luck with your project.

I don't think you would be able to do it using only 20mm stars, even if grouped close enough the spacing would be off. As others have said the ecotech puck is soldered to a pcb which gives the leds individual control as well as servings as an attachment to the heatsink for the ecotech radion.

Also realize the heat issues with grouping 15 leds in that close of a proximity, Ecotech made many attempts before getting this one just right i bet.

With that being said however, you can buy triple up and 4 up stars now that also have triple and 4up optics. So it is a mini version of what you are doing.

I haven't seen the 4ups, where are those?

You are better off just using 60 or 90 degree optics, a mix would be best. That is all they are doing, carclo optics would likely be more effective. Also, as far as heat issues, if you have a heatsink closely grouped LEDs are not a bid deal, even constant airflow over an aluminum plate would be enough to keep them cool. Your best bet is spreading them out a little bit, group the reds near the royal blues to avoid the "disco ball" effect, and improve on the radion's design by adding 420nm violets. Good luck with your build!

The soldering skills I have, I have done custom car audio for years and had to do custom soldering jobs everyday

Was I correct though in thinking that Ecotech uses only the led chips mounted to a circuit board and NOT an led chip mounted on a star like you would purchase or commonly see on a DIY setup?

I have a way to solder just the chip if that is infact what I would need to do, I would like someone however to post pictures of how exactly Ecotech has there led's done to atleast give me an idea

I watched the video of how to replace the stock lens with the new TIR lens which is what gave me the idea because they remove the stock reflector when they install the new lens

I THINK I could solder the chips directly to a bread board or even make my own circuit board if I have to "although I think a bread board would work just fine"

My main concern however is heat as since I dont yet know how Ecotech has there led chips mounted I would need to figure soumething out, as obviously I cant mount a chip directly to an aluminum heat sink LOL
Would a heatsink mounted to the back or the bread board/circuit board be close enough to provide proper heat dissipation?
I know typically on a DIY setup the led star is mounted directly to the heatsink, however there is no actual electrical connection between the star and the heatsink

So would mounting the bread board/circuit board directly to the heatsink with thermal paste and 4 screws work sufficiently enough to control heat?

Also I would obviously have a fan mounted, I could actually still use the Makersled heatsink that I had originally planned on using since its got a perfect size for what I need and it has a fan and a splash guard included

I think I can make this work in all honesty, I just need to do a little bit more research, I think I will order the lens anyways to atleast see how small of an area I need to mount the LED's in.

Worst case scenario is I am only out 30 dollars for the lens since everything else could be used for any led setup if I need to, Plus I am sure I could find someone to buy the lens

they sell 3 ups, 4ups, even 7 ups. You can email them and they will build custom ones for you. They have a whole series of triple up and 4 up using violet, royal blue, blue and white. Go and play around the site. You will fall into DIY heaven.
