My 40g tank (no sump) is fully cycled and I'm ready to add my first serious fish. I have 2 yellow tail damsels at the moment and a good amount of rock hiding places.

I saw a Powder Brown Tang at the LFS today that was absolutely beautiful and I would love get it. At least one source says it requires 70 gallons, so I don't want to be unfair to the fish. I'm pretty good about water changes and maintenance but I worry a 40g may not be enough elbow room.

What are some other cool options if the Tang wont work for me?

    Thanks in advance,
    Doratus

Here is a blurry phone pic. You can at least get an idea of the size and coloration.

Definitely too small for the tang. That tank will be too small for any highly active fish above 5 to 6 inches in length.

Royal Grammas, firefish, gobies and blennies are good to have.

You might have been able to keep it for a few months but it would have outgrown the tank and died or you would have to take it back. Best to buy fish that will be OK in your tank than push it with ones that won't. Keep the tang on your list for the bigger tank you know you are going to get.

I actually have two other tanks that are freshwater. A 20g long planted tank (which I can see becoming a sump in the near future) and a 55g Cichlid tank. Now that I have saltwater, the freshwater just doesn't as seem exciting anymore. If I could sell all the freshwater fish, convert the 55 and 20 into a DT/sump, I would already have all the gear I need for the fish I REALLY want.

This 40g will still make a nice little mini-reef though. (not quite nano ;D)

A Powder Brown Tang still won't fit in a 55g. This is a good list that I found on RC

Well, I'll worry about it when I get there. Thanks for the list.
