I know a good amount about most tangs, but not powders. I would appreciate any info as I don't want to buy a fish that will die on me or kill other fish.

I've had mine for a few months now. I'm no expert, but you're on the right track asking questions before buying! The regular tang rules apply. Tangs are generally considered a one per tank fish. Many will fight with each other, and an injury is not a good thing on a fish so prone to ich. They need to be acclimated properly for this reason. They need swimming room. Many say a 100 gallon is the minimum size tank. I have mine in a 90, and he seems to be doing ok, but they SWIM--so the more room the better. They need plant matter in their diet, so a clip with seaweed is considered a must by many. Their temperament seems to change in accordance to the content of their stomachs. When they're well fed, they behave wonderfully. When they are hungry they can be territorial and abusive to other fish.

    Other than that, good luck!!

"Powders" are in the family Acanthurus. This family includes (common names)
Powder Brown, Powder Blue, Achilles, Atlantic Blue, Clown, Whitecheek, Orange shoulder, Chocolate, Sohal, Convict, and Mimic. As a general rule of thumb in a tank that can handle more than 1 tang you should only keep 1 from each family.

I've had a Powder brown in the past and although it was an ick magnet it would always recover without the need for treatment. I really love that fish.

I found Powder Brown's to be quite mellow for Tangs compared to a Yellow or a Kole in my experience.

I loved my powder brown. It died suddenly a couple of nights ago. It never had any signs of illness. It ate one day and did not wake back up again. It was a little territorial, put my yellow tang (same size) in his place. He was my favorite, very beautiful.

Powder Blue's can be very aggressive to other tangs. I added a Powder Brown after my blue and it killed it in less then 2 weeks. If you are going to get a Powder Blue then I would make it your last fish you are going to add.

I had a powder brown that died of ich in a week. Great fish. Beautiful. But, as stated about, ich prone. And Sparky is right, they loooovvvve to swim. My yellow tang is the most active fish in the tank. I have a 75g and it probably needs bigger. Maybe I need a bigger tank.......Hmmmmmm.
