I had a great 90g. FOWLF tank all up and going.....then Hurricane Irene knocked out power for five days and that was the end of my tank. Kinda bummed out about it.

Anyway......just wondering how many people on here had the same thing happen to them....and how many people have a generator for this very issue.

Not sure if I'm going to "rebuild" this tank or break it down and go larger......

    Sorry for your loss.

I don't have a generator; I usually just agitate the water manually with a turkey baster. Thankfully my power has never been off longer than one day.

I use to live in Hurricane country and had a generator. Now I live in earthquake country... I need to pick my places better :-/

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I used to use a relatively large battery backup for life support, but that would only cover short outages, nothing like 5 days.

Depending on the $$ already invested in the tank, a small generator may be completely worth it.

    Hi
Sorry to hear about your tanks demise.
I think the best thing to do is have 2 backups or at least 1 that can do both jobs as not everyone will be home when the power goes out.
By that I mean if you buy a generator try to get one that can be hooked up to start automatically when the power goes off although I believe they are expensive.
Or have a backup battery system set-up for when the power goes out & a generator for when its out for long times.
You really only need to keep 1 pump or power-head going for aeration & in extreme cases maybe 1 heater or 1 fan to control temps

I had this made foe Me but Please beware this is for Australian 240v not American standard voltage.
ATJ's Marine Aquarium Site - DIY - Backup Power & it runs 1x62w return pump (not sure for how long I haven't tested it yet)its only new addition & thankfully our power doesn't go out often or for long.
I also have a 1kv generator thats used in our caravan that I can use in long power outages

I do a lot of camping and hunting so have a 3500w Champion generator on wheels that stays fueled up and ready to go with extension cords and outlet strips tied to the frame so they don't get misplaced.
I picked the generator up on sale at Checker/Schucks/Kragen/Oreileys for $238 a couple years ago.

For shorter outages I have a couple of the air pumps that plug in to the wall and come on automatically on battery when the power goes off and a couple of the plain battery air pumps.
