should i be turning off my power head when the lights turn off in my tank to stop the water current while my fish sleep? the lights are on a timer so if i wanted i could just put the powerhead on the same timer and it would shut off at exactly the same time.

Not necessary unless you do not have enough hiding places for them to sleep or are running 100+ times your volume.

While it's probably not necessary, I do have 1 PH plugged into the same timer as my light fixture and everything seems to enjoy the lighter flow at night, even though it's fairly low to begin with. I have a softies/LPS tank; my turnover rate is 36x daytime, and 24x at night.

I agree with both. 2in10 has a really good point about how much volume you may or may not be running.

My only thought is that in nature, the currents don't slow down when the sun goes down.

Agreed depending on tidal cycles and other factors flow over the reef can be more or less during the night time hours. Unless you see a real issue with the amount of flow and no place for your fish to "hide out" at night, I don't see a reason to change it at night.
