mine started to do that after a day long power loss, I unplugged it several times with no luck in correcting the normal flow, so I figured that after a long time off it reversed, so I unplugged it for a half hour and when turning back on she was running fine. I know you said you tried unplugging several times, but I think it helps with a cool down in between each plug in. Best of luck

The motors on powerheads are universal motors and have no correct direction of rotation so plugging and unplugging is hit and miss, its not a science and cold or hot does not matter. The only thing that makes an Evolution powerhead run in the correct direction if it did not start that way is the rubber bump stop that the impeller strikes if it starts backwards and which then forces it to run corectly.

With many powerheads like Maxijets and Voyagers it does not matter what direction they run since they use a paddlewheel type impeller with no screw or pitch so pumps the same either direction. The Evo has a pitch to the impeller so only works correctly in one direction which is why it is so efficient when running correctly.

AZ, Thanks for the information. I never gave it much thought, but that makes sense now. I had wondered what the bumper was for in the top of the housing.

dumb question but I guess I never checked to see if mine run right or in reverse, if they are in reverse they would not blow any water just suck in right?

The water sucks in the front and blows out around the sides, reverse of what it should be.

Here is my fix for the grilles cracking and the rubber bumper stop falling off.
I glued a thin strip of black plastic on the outside of the grille vertically so it reinforces the center web and the problem was solved.
