Tunze are nice for large tanks and they are controllable.

If price is no concern, the Vortech Propeller Pump is a programmable powerhead, wirelessly controlled if you have more than one. But at $400 a pop, it's quite spendy.

I've had mine more than a year and I've got nothing but good things to say about it.

Vortech and Tunze are good when money is no object. For those on a budget, Koralia is good, then Seio.

I am a super huge fan of the maxi jets with sureflow adapters. That said I also on some of the korelia and I hate them they just seem to be very cheap to me. However that is my opinion.

How many powerheads does a 55g tank require? I was thinking one on the opposite side from my filter but wasn't sure. Does the powerhead need to point towards the top of the water or down to get a good mix going on?

That depends on how big each powerhead is and what other flow you have going. I would point at least one of them up to aid in 02 exchange. i would say 2-3 as long as they are decent ie probably koralia 3's
