So yesterday, I come home and my garage door opener wouldn't work.
I no onger have the front door key on my key ring either.
Looked in the back window- just as I suspected- my DT lights were off- therefore the power was out- and why my garage door opener wouln't work.

Called the power company- their automated system says 2 hr estimate.

I had to go to work- power was still off, wife and kids gone out, etc.
On my way down the street to work, I noticed some trucks, etc.
I asked one of them if this was why my power was out- they said yep- we hit a cable. Hello- digging permits maybe?

I had taken my GFCI adapters offline before leaving for work- b/c in the past, when the source goes off and on, it has tripped the GFCI- when all was well.
I wanted the systems power up and running again ASAP.- Not aiting to talk my wife thru resetting the GFCI- from the phone while at work.

    The story eneded well.
I called later, my wife said when they got home power was back on, and everything looked the same to her.
**Even my DIY HOB overflow holds it's prime, and kept the overflow working once the power was back!

JUdging by my dial type timers for my lights- it was right at about 3 hours with the power off.

Just thought I"d share a day in the life, of Todd's Reef

    All is well.
I had an outage a few weeks back and my lights are on dial timers as well.
It wasn't unitl about midnight that I wondered why my tank lights were still on!

Strange that your GFCI trips like that. My GFCI outlet adapter works fine.
It may be worth a trip to the local hardware store to grab another one to try and a house key!

I am glad everything worked out for ya!its kinda funny that this story came up! I am a lineman and we do outages all the time just like a week ago we took a few houses out for a pole change out, and one of the customers had an amazing reef tank 210 gal. Luckily he came out and I was able to give him our generator to run at least his pumps.

They don't always trip like that, but no one was home when it came back on, and I was at work, etc. I think they work fine.

The house key is another good point though, I had it, must have lost/removed from my keyring years ago I guess.

Look into getting a battery back up garage door opener by chamberlin. They sell them at lowes and home depot. Also sears craftsman is made by chamberlain as well. The opener will go up and down 40 times while the power is out. I'm a garage door technician and the battery back up is my best seller. Just make sure its a chamberlin.
