i had a power outage for a few seconds today and it dawned on me that i am using a CPR Bak Pak HOB skimmer that holds a fair amount of water and a CPR Aqua Fuge HOB refugium that holds 2.5g.

i realized that when the power is off to them the water will run back into the tank. im not sure if all the water runs back to the tank but i really dont want to find out since im not in the mood to see if i can overflow the tank.

does anyone know if all the water will flow back to the tank???

should i buy a battery backup in case the power goes out for more than a few seconds????

Well, the only thing you can really do is test them. Not ALL of the water should come back out, but it may drain at least to the return ports.
I would drop the water a little bit, then shut off power just to see what happens. Note how much it raises the water level in the tank. If you can without it being too hideous, just run the water level in the tank low enough to allow room for the HOB equipment to drain if need be.

I run a UPS since our power outages are seldom and only last a few hours at a time. My HOB filter and in-tank skimmer both have the top of their water line the same as my tanks, so I'm lucky on the overflow.

I think you should unplug it and see what would happen in the even of a power outage. This was the first thing I did when I set up my tank. I live in an area that has alot of power outages so I even went the etra mile and got a generator setup just to be safe. Hope you get the sump set up to the right level.
