There is a huge storm coming in! In case of an outage what should I do to prevent a mass death cascade? I have a bicube hqi with Sps, some lps and some softies along with fish and shrimp.

We just had a tonrado wrning for the past few hours. We are not in warning/watch anymore, but it is till storming pretty badly.

The best thing to have is a small generator. If you don't already have one, obviously you cannot just go out and get one now.

The number one thing you will want is the water needs to stay oxygenated. Battery operated pumps are also your best friends at times like these. Also, look into an APC unit. This is a battery back-up which will keep pumps running for some time. Just don't have all your equipment on it or it will die fast. You shouldn't need to worry about lights or skimming during a power-outage.

For now, you could take a cup of water from the tank and pour it from higher up above the surface.

You could get a battery operated airator to keep oxygen in the tank. Or if you got the money a backup battery system.

Yeah I live in an apartment so a generator is most likely not possible. A battery pack type thing would be better but the storm is bad an here now. So just try to keep the water oxygenated? Any other suggestions?

The battery back up is definitely a a good idea. You can find them in the computer section of craiglist alot of times for pennies on the dollar, and if you run a little air bubbler/stone and or maybe even a small under rated power head you can get alot of life out of one.

If you dont have a battery back up, even a tuperware pouring the water in and out the tank is better than nothing. I would call that the last line of emergency defense though cause its gonna get tiring fast, but if its tank life ot death do what ya gotta do ya know?

1+ seano pretty much nailed it.
take the bucket/ or cup with the water and pour it back in from a higher distance every 15minutes or so. I would put an alarm clock on me just to remind myself to do it as it is pretty easy to forget!

If you could keep the water temperature around 73-75 it be ok as the colder the water the better the oxygen retention. ( not too cold though).

the most important thing is keep circulation going with an air pump for oxygination. other than that the power could go out for like a day with probably no ill affect

enter your zip, go down to the bottom and click the small satellite image and it will open a big map that shows the current storm/hazard/thunderstorm/tornado warning & risk areas.

its what we use to monitor the weather at work.
