I should say I'm talking about standard overflows. I know there are some "newer" models, but I've never had anything but standard.

I use an Eshopps overflow, which has never failed to re-start siphon after thousands of starts and stops. Since I have a Reef Angel, just in case it ever did fail, I setup a float switch inside my overflow box (the tank side). If the box ever fills with water, it will kill power to the return pump. Whenever I work in the tank and sticks an arm all the way to the bottom, it activates the float since too much water enters the box at one time; so I know it works ;) Automatically restarts once the water level in the overflow box lowers.
