I was wondering what people generally do with the powerhead usage at night. I have a 30 gallon fish only tank. I want to know if it should be turned off at night in order to let the fish "rest". I have not turned it off thus far because the current in the ocean is always flowing, however a aquarium environment is quite different than the actual ocean. Any feedback on this is appreciated.

What you said... I leave my tank running. They'll be at ease.

I kill my PHs at night. Still run return and skimmer. Cuts about 1/3 of the movement. Gives my more delicate night time fish a chance to come out and hunt.

Thank you all for the quick responses. So do you think it has anything to do with the types of fish that you have in the aquarium. I have 2 clown fish, an auriga butterfly, a blue hippo tang, and a cleaner shrimp. The powerhead moves 600 gph, along with a mechanical filter at 280 gph, and protein skimmer at 295 gph. Total there is 1175 gph in the tank, so cutting off the powerhead will just slow down the movement.

I just shut down the lights. With enough rock, the fish will find a good spot out of the flow. They sleep anyway......

Ditto on just turning out the lights. My six-line wrasse and coral beauty have their little "sleeping places" in the rocks anyway - and the clowns go to their clown corner (which is under a powerhead).

Protien skimmers are not supposed to be added to the calculation of water circulation and im sure the mech. filter also.

Well, does the ocean completely shut down flow and tidal patterns just because it's night time? ;)
