Just wanted to see how much heat a couple of my powerheads are adding to the water.

I put 2 32 gallon trash cans side by side. Each had about 25 gallons.
One night one can sit's alone while the other had a SEIO M820 going all night.
One night one can sat empty while the other had a Koralia 4.

    Results:
The SEIO water temperature was 82 degrees.
Can with water only ...78 degrees.

    Koralia 4 was 80 degrees.
Can with water only still 78 degrees.

That's a lot of heat for smaller tanks especially.

That's really interesting. In my 55g, I just recently installed a pair of Koralia 2 and after a couple of days, I noticed the temp had actually dropped a degree (and holding). I am assuming it's because of the circulation I am getting a more 'true' reading.

FYI - have 3 thermometers in tank - one on each end at top (one in front and one in back) and another in the back bottom - to see if I have consistent temp throughout (and I do). Just consistently a degree lower now.

Is your thermometer close to the power head? Are you reading from top of water or bottom?

No, It's in a trash can so.. I just stick the thermometer down in there.

Most of the time it will lower temperature due to flow. Unless you have WAY too much motor and it outweighs the flow. Like when you have a Koralia 4 in 25 gallons ;)

I added 2 koralia 1's in my 40 and it dropped temp by about 2 degrees

I believe the Koralias work like a fan, they actually cool the motor as they run.... I love them!

I run 2 SEIO 1100's in a 75g and I have to use a heater to keep it at 78.

You're also comparing apples to oranges. Koralia 4puts a lot more flow via a propeller vs SEIO's impeller. You cant tell anybody with common sense that a pump running a large propeller will run cooler then a small impeller. The reason why the water temp was cooler was from evaporative cooling done more surface agitation from the Koralia. I bet if you ran the same test in a controlled enviroment where there wasnt an air conditioning vent in the room and you marked the water levels of the containers, you would see that one evaporated more water then the other.

if it's a big point of concern just go with vortech pumps, no heat is pumped into the tank at all since the motor is outside the system
