Ok, Right now I have two very strong powerheads, no name brand crappy Ebay ones. But there doing the job rated at 1050 GPH. I want to switch up and some new power heads and a controller the Vortex are out of my price range but I was looking at the Hydor's. My question is, is it better to get 2 strong powerheads rated for 55 Gallons and up (I have a 55 Gallon) or say 4 slightly weaker ones for less than a 55 Gallon but place them all over.

The more powerheads you have, the easier it is to control the flow to create random currents, eliminate dead spots, etc in any tank. That's even more critical in a standard 55 due to it's length vs width, so I'd recommend at least 4 units.

You can normally get better flow, less dead spots with more heads. If you do I would suggest getting 4 550s in the Hydors.

If you go four, take a look at the JBJ Oceanstream 500 gph. Very nice powerheads for the money and you can get a Oceanpulse wavemaker to go with them if you want.

In case you were still looking for input, I have (2) Koralia 1050s and (2) Koralia 750s in my 55. All are on my wavemaker so they are not all on at the same time of course. Definitely no dead spots though!
