I thought I had posted a thread about this, but I can't find it back.

I want to go with Hydor Koralia powerheads for my 55g reef. What size and how many would you recommend? I was thinking maybe one on each end and one in the middle?

I want to have some sps, softies, a sponge, polyps, maybe a few amenone.

Well this is a very subjective question because your tank is 12" wide by 48" long... I would say you have a couple of options or even more. And I will point out that Korelia has a new improved and smaller cone called Evolusion. I saw them in the store yesterday. A 750gph, 1050gph and 1400gph. The old korelia 4 was 1200gph. Ok so then with the 1400gph powerhead I would say that 2 units would do you. That's a lot of flow if you ask me. I have 2 korelia 4's on the ends of my 210g tank and 2 korelis 2's in the middle. I'm thinking of changing mine myself. Do get professional help on this if you can. I may be right or I could be wrong. Your sump pumps flow has a bit to do with this also. All the best. :cheesy:

Well thanks, this was very helpful. This is about $80 for the 2 of them. I will have the Eheim Hobby pump 1048 for my return pump(160gph) and the Visi-Jet Protein Skimmer, which is rated for up-to 70gallons. I'll have mechanical filter pads, and bioballs for mechanical filtration.

The evolution would be a better choice if you can get them. (they are more avaliable online than in the store.) If you get the original korilia, I can tell you this, there is not much size diffrence between the 2 and the 3. I would recommend get two korilia 3's . I have a 46 with a 2 & a 3 and personally I hate how big they are but I am happy with the flow they produce. I believe you will not want the giant 4 in your size tank. You will notice them severly!! The number 1's are much smaller than any of them (besides the nano) but seem to produce less flow than there rating, You would not want those unless you put four of them in your tank. I would strongly recommend you take the advice given and get your hands on the smaller Evolutions or go with two 3's of the original.

I haven't had power heads before, but I have seen the old Koralias in the LFS. They an eye-soar. I like the smaller, newer Evolution.

Ordering online won't be a problem. If I can afford it, I'd like to get all my stuff in 2 orders/ shipments that way I'll start off the new tank with everything I need.

    -Lighting
    -Skimmer
    -Powerheads
    -Return Pump
    -etc

Go with the Marine Stealth pro for a heater. I believe they are the only shatter proof heaters on the market. Nice investment for a tank with so much money going into it.

I do believe that's what I have. NO glass, right? Just a solid black outside covering?

I was thinking of switching a titanium tube heater though for my 55. It has an external temp nob and a temp censor, allowing more accurate temp change. This will keep the water at desired temp and not just the heater, as most coil heaters do.
