Ok I am still in the process of deciding what I want to put in my 40 gallon high tank. I would love to have a yellow dwarf fuzzy lionfish in the tank with an angler but I know that wont happen because of the angler eating the lionfish. I would love to have an angler but they get so big and eat everything and dont want to keep the tank to an only one fish tank. I was also looking into getting octopus but I know they only live for 2years and I was wondering how much you have have to feed them and how often as well as how active are they and what kind of fish can you put in with them? Also considering the octopus how do I suicide proof the tank including the overflow, skimmer etc. I would also love to include a type of triggerfish but again need to know what I could put in a 40g high tank, everyones opinion is very well appreciated.

Basically what I am saying is that I would love activity as well as a cool predatory fish.

Octopus are difficult to keep in aquariums, and I believe their life span is very short (just a year or so – maybe two). They require a sealed tank which becomes problematic for gas exchange which is critical to this animal. I have heard people using egg crates and the like for exchange and to seal the animal in. do some homework advanced aquarist had an article years back….one sec, I’ll google it. yup – read here: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/july2003/invert.htm

I read a post on this forum a ways back about someone keeping lion fish and triggers, can’t recall the variety or sizes….more noteworthy, can’t recall the out come.

Google for compatibility charts around the fish you desire most and build the tank to suit that fish.

most octopus live about a year from their hatching.its almost impossible to tell their age.some species are very recluse and others will be out more often then not.how often they are out depends also on water temp and how much they are fed.you can have 1 be more active in the right conditions but this will shorten their life.they do eat a good amount generally inverts. mine was eating 2-3 crayfish a day.as for suicide proofing the tank, they can get through eggcrate ull need either a fine screen lid or glass cover.ill try to remember to get you pics of my octo tank.now if u understand the risks and responcibilities of keeping an octo,to me, its totally worth it.i did have a 3 stripe damsel and a pencil urchin in with mine but they r no promises the octo wont eat them.

    some tips ive noticed:
feed live crabs as much as possible over frozen.reason being, it keeps them happy and ocupied so they will b less likely to try to escape.

try to wear white around the tank.octos seem to respond better to white then dark colors.

ill try to make a thread about them this week keep ur eyes open for it.ill go more in depth there.

awesome thanks for the info, I heard the blue spotted octo was active during the day. Only reason I dont want to really take a chance is because they can kill you, But I would be very responsible with it if need be, making signs to put up in my room and what not with warnings.

i wouldnt do a blue ring dude. its DEF not worth it. one slip up and you, or someone you love is gone. all that just because you wanted to see something during the day? noy worth it one bit to me. besides, they only get golf ball size anyhow. try and find that in a 40 gal. without getting mad.

lol, yea I know the dangers and I would take the necessary steps to house it and keep people from danger, like signs of danger and stuff, but yea golfball size is terribly tiny, what octopus is active during the day that gets a good size for a 40g?
