So two years ago (2010) my new year's resolution was to quit smoking. I did it cold turkey and my last cig was 12/31/09. I had smoked for about 12 years before quitting.

Last year (2011) my resolution was to attack my dept. Not including our house payment I have cut my dept by 60%.

This year (2012) my goal was to create a well stocked hurricane supply. After doing some extensive research I realized there are people who go all out and prep for when SHTF. I just wanted to build a 3 day survival kit for my wife and I. It has now turned into another hobby and I hope to have a four week supply of water, food, survival gear, and ammunition just in case a large hurricane or some other disaster hits Florida again.

There is a new show on National Geographic called "Doomsday Preppers" which I think I'll watch a couple times. I by no means think our entire society will or even can collapse, but I don't think it's a bad idea to be prepared for natural disasters.

Anyone else ever think about stocking up? Or if you have already how many days are you prepared for? I haven't started yet, but I have started to compile a list of things we need.

when i went to oklahoma people would prep for blizzards, they are not at all used to snow there and if there is only a half inch there are still alot of crashes because of a lack of knowing how to drive on icy/snowy roads. also we used to prep for tornadoes when we lived in oklahoma, and those come much more often than snow! haha

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Oh for crying out loud, I could not for the life of me figure out what peppers, the plant had to do with disasters.....thank you dyslexia.

With regard to preppers, I think a bomb shelter is taking it too far and having enough food, batteries and toilet paper is just right, more power to you.

I'm a prepper... though I have lived in hurricane zones my whole life and have been seriously rocked before. I live in Gulfport, MS... basically ground 0 for hurricane Katrina and I have lived through an additional 7 hurricane force storms. It's not a lifestyle here as much as basic necessity. I have enough water and basics to last 2 weeks at any time. I actually have water for much longer thanks to my aquarium hobby! At any given time in addition to my survival water stores I am keeping 100 gallons of ro/di!

    I keep:
    Water - 4/30 gallon sealed
    MRE - 50 on hand
Batteries - an open bulk pack and an unopened of all each type of major (aa,aaa,c,d,9v)
First aid kit / wound kit (this was the hardest to get together for me)
Candles (bulk package I think like 20 or so in there)
And then I have my camping supplies that I use often enough that I know it's all good and that has rope, saws, hatchets, oil, lamps, griddles, etc)

Then my business has a 500 gallon fuel station (I own a car dealership)

Thanks, nothing like bringing up hurricanes in January! Home Depot and Publix would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for purchasing your Hurricane Stockpile!

Lol I thought you said peppers also!

But PA is very kind, last blizzard was in '96 and last flooding in my area was never. Regardless, we still keep a generator that will power my block and we have a front end loader with a 5' wide bucket... Lifts 15+ tons. So snow isn't much of an issue either.
