By DIY I mean that it's a kit I bought that you have to do all of the wiring yourself. It's actually pretty simple to do. Here is a link to it and the dosing pump that I use in combination with it. The only other thing you need would be an extension cord. Final cost is around $60 after shipping I believe. Pretty cheap compared to everything else I've seen and I've had no problem with it at all.

it didnt really short, when i looked at the fan, it was installed upside down and the connection wire to the fan had corroded away. a sautering gun and also a sazall would be really nice to have, maybe i should look at what i can get for cheap at work (home depot :p)

One of the two fans has to be mounted "upside down". One fan blows air in, the other blows air out. This is only possible if one is mounted the opposite of the other. A dremel is *wonderful* for small item repairs. I upgraded my fans to SilenX and I'm very happy with it.

well once my financial aid check comes in the mail hopefully Sept. 9 I will be buying the K-2 Viper Lamp (not sure which one [150w or 70w] ) but once that happens my tank will be topless and I don't think I would need fans anymore - just a hard working ATO ( i seem to lose about 2cups of water per day since I've started leaving the lid open for aeration )

To get back on topic, I'd say anything 10 gallons or up if you only want one fish. For a 10 gallon it will have to be a fish that stays small. I had a 10 gallon with a single blue damsel in it for 4 years (years ago).
