Real quick, what is everyone's opinion on refugiums in regards to whether they be neighboring, hang-on tank, or in-tank?

Does anyone here use them as acclimation tanks? Or even quarantine?

Best stuff to fill them with? (live rock?substrate?live plants?)

    Thanks guys!!

You can have a hang on refuge if there is no space issue, but under the tanks seem to be the most popular. In tank fuge is really just putting the macro algae inside the display tank(DT for short) and a lot of people say that is an eye sore but other's have no problem with it. It is all up too you! An acclimation process is actually not that bad of an idea, although when you get more in the hobby and start acclimating fish's in the DT you get too see the reaction of every fish and find out if it is going to be welcomed or bullied(my opinion, I have had a few fish I have had to take back because my other's would not accept him even when it was in the bag!) As for filling them, again that is up to you but Cheatomorpha seems to be quite popular, feather calurpa can go sexual but that is usually when idiot's leave their fuge lights on 24/7.... macro algae need time to rest and resting helps assure proper photosynthesis, whew! my right shoulder hurts after typing that

Where ever you decide to put is ok, all places have been done before.
No on using them as QT tanks, as it is plumbed to your DT.
Yes, deep sand and live plants to consume nitrates.

Depends on the tank size and what you are able to do. I have a 12"x12" offset fuge in a 20g long under my 90g DT. The rest is a sump. For me, that is the best solution. For small tanks, a HOB is OK, but you can do so much more with one that is under the tank IMO.

Here is a picture for reference. The fuge is at the far end. The near end holds my three powerheads, heater and skimmer. Nothing fancy.

As for what goes in it? Some people like DSB in theirs. Some do a 1" SB. Some do mud, some do both. I have a one inch mud base in mine and when my nitrates decrease to a reasonable level, I am adding one inch of sand to it. Some keep LR in theirs. I do not. No particular reason. So, in mine, there is mud and macroalgae at the moment and nothing else. Many ways to skin a cat.

Anyway....here is a photo of my creation.
