i have one of those glass covers and i didnt have the plastic edge in the back.i was wondering since i put that on now will it cause my tank to heat and the gas exchange from occuring even tho i have gaps in some areas and holes in the back plastic.

That's not what I was talking about - I meant a lip that goes around the whole tank in place of a lid.

If you have a lid and the plastic extension it will retain heat more. You can use egg crate in place of the plastic to help.

I actually used the glass lid that came with my 10 gallon originally. I took the hinge off, cut the back plastic to fit around the hoses, wires and filter with a couple of extra holes. Then when I put it on I leave a small 1/4" gap in the middle and one in the front and put my light on top.

Not only did it help with evaporation, it keeps my yellow clown goby in, cuts down immensely on salt creep and salt on the light. But to date not one issue with heat, or anything else.

On my 16 I use the egg crate.

Will the Egg Crate help with Evaporation at all? I've just set up a 115gal tank, and its loosing about 5gal a week. im not sure if thats on the normal side or not. but seems a little high to me. Didnt think i would have to top it off daily. its open top atm with a 2' glass brace across the middle on top.

Not high at all...depending on lights, my 125 gal does that about every 3 days.

they sell sheets of acrylic at home depot and lowes you.i imagine you can make something with both acrylis and eggcrate.would probably help with your evap.and buy weather strips to cover the edges of it all.that would look very nice.i can picture it now.::) haha
