    Hi All,

New member here. I've had my 55 gal reef tank set up for 2 weeks now and am having skimmer problems. Tank has live sand, about 45 lbs of live rock (cured), 10 snails/crabs and two damsels. Tank was initially filled with RO/DI water which I have also used for top up. I have a pro clear wet/dry that i'm using as a sump. Problem is that the pro clear skimmer (MPS 75 w/Rio 600) is not making any foam. It appears to be adjusted correctly and has appeared to be making foam once or twice but has now stopped and just has lots of bubbles, but no real foam building up or collecting in the cup. Any ideas? Is the Rio too small?

    Thanks,

    added any chemicals??

I noticed when I added my Reef supplement #7 to my wet/dry the skimmer only makes a thin line of bubbles for a day or so...weird...but thought Id throw that in just in case...

also takes a couple of weeks for a protein skimmer to develop a skim over the surface, which is necessary to bubble properly......

maybe a more experienced aqua man (or woman!) can help more...

Thanks for the reply! Haven't added any chemicals yet. About the only thing that's been in the tank is my arm. Could that do anything?

could be not enough nutrients in the water to skim. it is a young tank. this is normal.

Actually, sticking your arm into the tank can disrupt foam production for a short amount of time. My skimmer is rated for a 200 gallon tank and driven by a 950 gph pump and even it slows for a few minutes when I've had my arm in!

I also have to agree with reiple, when there is nothing to skim, the foam column will collapse until there is something to pull out. I'm sure it will pick back up in time.

I just bought a MPS 150 as well - my tank is 1 week old.
    How do you adjust it?
