First post, but I was hoping someone out there has had the same problem or at least knows how to fix this issue.

I have an older 50g reef octopus skimmer (pump is made by king)that I purchased new around 2006. A few weeks ago, it would cut off by itself. I have checked the power cord, plug-in prongs, powerstrip (everything else plugged into it is working fine). I contacted coral vue who services these in the US, and they said it was the impeller, which I agreed and promptly replaced.

Now even with the new impeller it is still cutting on and off at random. It will cut on and work for 10-20 seconds, then cut off for 1-5 minutes. This cycle repeats over and over again. I have descaled it regularly, checked for physical blockages in the pump housing, and everything else I can think of.

:confused:Please help!? Thanks for your time.

I don't know anything about that particular pump, but unless it has an internal thermal breaker and it's overheating that quickly, you probably have a faulty wire inside the motor that's arcing and then losing contact when it gets hot. Either way, it sounds like it's time for a new pump.
