Problem with mixing salt

I mixed Red Sea Pro Coral reef salt into a 30 gallon trash can filled with RO water. I use two Maxi-Jet 900's for circulation and a 200 watt heater. After 24 hours of mixing I added some kalkwasser to raise the Ca level but noticed the alkalinity dropped to 6.0 dKH the next day. So I added Kent Marine Super-buffer which is suppose to raise alk. (contains bicarbonate). The next morning the water was white! I suppose the calcium reacted with the carbonate and formed crystals. Any opinions on what happened? I did not add the powder form of calcium hydroxide. I mixed the powder in a separate bucket and after 24 hours I used a little bit of the water on the top of the bucket.

 

Try not to mix buffers from two different producers. Very often they use totally different buffering components (different than hydrocarbonate/bicarbonate based buffers).

Can you check what is the composition of Kent Marine Super-buffer?! That would be very useful info.

 

the Ca dKH swung out of bounds from each other. the milky water is from to much dKH in comparison to the Ca. calcium chloride will raise Ca better than calcium hydroxide. when you add Ca the dKH will drop, thats normal. bicarbonate will lower the pH best to use carbonate. seachem has a reef buffer that raises pH with dKH and a reef builder that raises dKH. you get more for your money in the dry form. the powerheads should produce enough heat to warm the water, why are you using a heater also?

The water only get up to 72 degrees with just the powerheads on. Should I use kalkwasser in my top off water to pH and balance Ca/Alk. in the display tank?

 

i wouldnt, kalwasser is best used with an aatoc using ro/di at night. why are you doctoring the water anyway?

 

I thought I'd use Kalkwasser instead of two-part to keep my Ca and Alk. stable in the tank. Kalk is less expensive than two-part.

 

i thought you were talking about the new water added for a water change. the kalwasser can be used with top off water on the tank to keep the water level correct on a daily basis prefferably at night. what i meant was adding kalwasser to the new water for a water change isnt a good idea. and yes it is cheaper in the long run. do you have a Ca reactor?

back to square one, which water are you putting the kallwasser in, the tank as top off or new water for a water change?
