I have just passed the one week mark on my new tank. I am new this whole hobby and it has been an extremely interesting process. A WHOLE LOT to learn, but that is the fun part for me!

As per my LFS suggestions, I have been letting it sit with the pump, heater and skimmer on, lights off and filters in. While I realize it is really early in the process, I brought in a sample of my water for the LFS to test and at least run me through the process before I start buying kits to test at home. They ran me through the testing of Salinity (currently 1.023), Alkalinity (8dkh), Ammonia (.25) and the Nitrate and Nitrite tests (both at zero).

They put me on the Seachem Stability solution and to start 'ghost feeding' with a little bit of fish food every 3rd day or so. As you probably can tell... I a little bit excited about the process. I'm a geek...... :)

welcome to 3reef and the exciting hobby. I'm a geek too :) .....I might suggest that you not run the skimmer while you cycle.....

I was wondering the same thing and have read both ways. Is the purpose of this to help the bacteria grow as fast as possible?

you're just not removing materials DOC's that need to be present for the cycle to occur. At least that's my understanding.
