Property Protection

If your car or truck is parked in your driveway and someone gets into it, and you catch them can you shoot them legally? I know this sounds stupid to ask on a reef forum, but I was just curious on when it is and is not ok to do that.

no u cant they have to be in your home and u have to be able to prove without a doubt that they were there to harm you or your family its a tricky thing to go into thats y i have an oak baseball bat instead lol

 

No, unless they are a threat. You can only shoot if your life is in danger. Anyways, what would be in your car anyway? Also, you can hold them at gun point till the cops come, just don't shoot.

 

better get 2 oak baseballs incase you break one....LOL

 

It really depends upon your state, generally most states only allow force when your life is threatened.

If you ever happen to be in this situation when the police come, it is important you convey to the police you thought you were gonna be killed.

I used to know a guy that did 5 years in jail for shooting a guy in a head when he caught him stealing his rig. He went to jail because he was only defending his property not his life.

 

Seriously, guys, you can't answer this question without knowing where. Texas, New Hampshire? Yes. New Jersey? Hell no. Anywhere else? Somewhere in between depending on the situation.

Since this is Indiana, I have no idea.

 

lol, I already new I would get some smart remark for asking, but my dad and I always argue about that stuff, so i was just making sure i was right;D. Also I like to see what other people would do, like the baseball bat for example.

 

I heard you only get one chance though after that you cant do anything else, so if you hit them and dont kill them, can you still go to jail?
