Protein Skimmer for a Nano necessary?

Is a protein skimmer for a nano necessary?

I do 20% water changes a week on the 24g . But I feel adding a protein skimmer may help with my water quality and possibly stretch out my water changes.

    what do you all think?

    alfredt,

I have a 12gal nano dx with two false percula clown 3 bubble tips, a scarlett hermit and a colony of pinz zoo's. I only have 2 astea snail in the tank along with the hermit crab for clean up crew. i have not tested my water in over two months and I only change the water out every month or so, yet everything is doing great the zoo's are all open and my copod and mysis are all over the place. My setup i have a cassette case made for a surface skimmer, in area 1 i have 3 media filter, 2nd area i have the bioballs and 3rd is just the pump. I have 20pds of LR and 20pds of LS.

What i am trying to get across is that if it is working dont try to break it.

Yes, a skimmer will help a lot with water quality. You don't say in your post what you have or want in your nano. Fish only, you should be able to get by without skimmer and doing water changes. Inverts and/or corals you will definitly want one.

Premium Aquatics sells this nano sized skimmer. Have not seen it work, but it is getting a lot of press.

    Thanks Berlin_joe.

So you kept your bioballs in the back chamber. And it seem to be doing fine..cool. Every forum I've read said to remove the bioballs.

I currently have just one false percula , 3 asteria snails, 4 blue leg hermits, 4 turbos, two bta, zoos, brain, pagoda, mushrooms, polyps, 20lbs of live sand, 25-35 lbs of LR. and its been running since Nov '05. part of the live sand came from my mature 50 gal. And no media in the chambers only sponge which is rinsed out every week.

maybe i should just leave the sponge for bacteria growth.....

    :)

Yes, I feel the same way about the skimmer and helping with the water quality.

You can take a peek at my nano tank in my gallery :)
Let me know what you think.
