Protein Skimmer on Frag tank?

Well, luckily there was a great summary published in Febuary
"The Biology and Economics of Coral Growth" Osinga et al. 2011

It was actually published as an open-access journal article, so it is available to everyone and is really good review of the factors that influence coral growth. It is intended to be used for cost benefit analysis for the aquaculture industry. And is a bit technical, but you can skim through and should be able to pick up on the main ideas.

Abstract
To protect natural coral reefs, it is of utmost importance to understand how the growth of the main reef-building organisms—the zooxanthellate scleractinian corals—is controlled. Understanding coral growth is also relevant for coral aquaculture, which is a rapidly developing business. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of factors that can influence the growth of zooxanthellate scleractinian corals, with particular emphasis on interactions between these factors. Furthermore, the kinetic principles underlying coral growth are discussed. The reviewed information is put into an economic perspective by making an estimation of the costs of coral aquaculture.

That link is a semi long & complicated read but a good portion is understandable. A lot of good insight to understanding corals. I know it's an old thread but still really good link. Thanks

 

I believe corals actually excrete waste simply from photosynthesis. I could be wrong though.

 

You are right Daniel. They do produce ammonia just like other animals. Most of the ammonia is taken in by the zooxanthella living inside them. However the more you feed them the more ammonia they expel.

I am running a 55g reef with only softies (Hawaii) I have a Hang on Hot Mag can filter with rings and a 2g hang on skimmer. Am I taking more then I should from the water? All prams are great, I run a single MP10 vortex of tidal pool with sleep, and a really great reef LED set with a chiller holding at 78 degrees. my Zoa's have slowed, my Pal's are doing great and my mats are covering a good bit but I would like to get my Zoa's back to full blast. any suggestions?

side note.
I run blue LED all night, is this good for the few fish I have? Long Nose anglefish, sixline wrasse and 2 mated breeding P-clowns (on tile)

I run LED light 8 hours rest is blue LED, but skimmer/filter is 24/7
