Protein Skimmer Overflowing

I have set up my protein skimmer for the new 55g tank and after adding the live rock it seemed to fill the collection cup very quickly, almost in minutes. It seemed to settle down and when I got to aquascaping my tank it did it again. I am afraid to keep it on overnight in fear of it overflowing and pumping water onto the floor. How do I fix this? It's a hang on the back protein skimmer if it helps.

 

gotta let it break in unfortunately, this is why I dont care for skimmers out of a sump

 

I've got one too no sump unfortunately. just got to set the collection cup up high for now. came home a day after setting mine up and got a wet floor..

 

I've known some peps to drill a hole in the cup and attach airline tubing that drains into a gallon ( or bigger ) container.

 

However, if the tank has an ATO, this is very risky unless there's a shut off float on the remote skimmate container.

 

I had a coralife super skimmer and if was awful. I think my reef octopus bh-100f overflow once in 2 years. I had two of them, one each of my tanks, 55g and 46g. I thought they were phenomenal.

 

As someone already said if the skimmer is brand new you should let it run for a few days to brake in. Also by the sound of it it overflows only when you added rock and were aquascaping which could mean that the water level in the tank got higher and that was the reason for overflowing.
