I'm asking because I bought some melafix to treat a fish with a fin problem. I have a 90 gal tank and the bottle says to turn off the "protein skimmer". Well if I do that I turn off the whole system.

    Says 1 TSP per 10 gal so I add 9 tsp's ?

Edit: Also says to take out "activated carbon" ???

That would be correct, as for the system shut down, I would ask someone who knows more about the system you have how to do that... I just have a normal hang on back skimmer which i can shut that one off by itself.

I think you are confusing your overflow with a protein skimmer.

Then you don't have to worry about turning it off...
They are very important for removing excess proteins from the water, you should look into buying one.
