    Hey everyone,
I've been reading a ton of conflicting information regarding setting up a reef tank, however the one thing that seems to always be recommended is a protein skimmer.
The problem I'm running into is my current tank setup does not contain a sump. I'd like to avoid having one as this can get very unsightly and I don't have a place to hide it in my tiny NYC apartment. I have a Cascade 1000 canister filter which connects to my 55 gallon tank. The questions I have is A: do I need a protein skimmer with this type of filter and B: how would I set this up given the lack of a sump. I hear that the "hang-on" skimmers aren't a covert good option either.

    Thank you in advance!

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Some HOB skimmers are fine and work efficiently.

The question comes down to do you really need a skimmer? Do you have algae problems, heavy bio-load, feeding heavily?

+1 The inherent problem with most HOB skimmers is they can overflow.(and have!!!).

Canisters don't really promote gas exchange and need regular maintenance. With that said it is entirely possible to run the system using one.
We like skimmers because they are realatively easy to clean and maintain. They will not trap detritus and are great ways to help with o2 levels.During periods when your windows are closed this becomes more important. Some run the venturi airline to receive fresh air to facilitate a more stable system.PH's of course will help in the absence of a protein skimmer.Do not overstock.;)

Answered your questions on one of the other forums you posted on.
There are pretty decent HOB skimmers but not cheap. You might watch Craigslist for a used one.

I use a REEF OCTOPUS BH2000 (it's an HOB skimmer, i also do not have a sump) on my 55 and it does a great job. I used to run a canister filter also, but it stated causing problems within 6 months.

Thanks for all of the great advice guys. Someone mentioned the odyssea pro pack skimmer, with a rio 800rvt pump as a good/cost-effective option for a protein skimmer. Just wondering what your thoughts were regarding this product? It's only around $50 which is 1/3 of the price from other HOB skimmers. That just makes me skeptical right off the bat

When it comes to HOB skimmers stay away from cheap brands with Crappy pumps. I promise you'll regret it. Stick with a reef octopus or a back pack skimmer. HOB skimmers are very touchy and prone to overflowing so buying quality will save you serious trouble. If you can't buy a quality brand your better off not having one.

    +1 to all the above.

There is no such thing as a "good, cost-effective option"; with skimmers, you get what you pay for. You are definitely wise for being skeptical over the price of the Odyssea. IMOPE, RIO is dumpster food.
