This exit pipe has me questioning the previous owners on why they would do it like this. As you can see in the picture that as the PVC exits the skimmer there is a PVC tee and a vertical PVC pipe with a hole drilled in the top, followed by a quick disconnect, then a 90 degree elbow that goes up to another 90 degree elbow which then goes horizontal to another PVC tee with a vertical PVC pipe with a hole drilled in the top, and you see the rest of the configuration. I know there is an easier way to do that. Any suggestions?

my best guess would be that they wanted to put more back pressure on the unit so they put in that vertical 90 and then ran it over. the to reduce bubbles they put in the second vertical vent hole.
It woulda been 1000 times easier to just put in a gate valve though...

Or another option is that they had to go over the side of the tank... which still doesnt make sense how they glued it though. lol

Yea I know. Plus I talked to the people at Coralvue and they told me that the skimmer is suppose to be fed with a recommended 700-750 gph pump and they have a mag 3 presently on. I will cut it all off when I set up my tank and run a single pipe with a check valve. Thanks for your help D.

The caps with the hole drilled in them are probably vents/noise suppression.

Does it sit IN the sump? Then it would need a pipe, etc.

Being a external skimmer I would assume it is a siphon break. Since it seems like it sits up and then dumps to the sump under the water level. It could siphon out more water than supplied and cause level problems. But I don't know why you would need two... backup? Just a guess. Of course all the other twists and turns are not needed. Perhaps that was just what was needed/done in the previous use for no reason.... or they had a lot of PVC they felt like using up. :)
