Depends on what kind of corals you will be keeping. . .

If you are keeping softies and some LPS - then a skimmer rated for up to 50 gallons would be good. But if you are planning on going with Mostly LPS/SPS then you will want a skimmer rated for 100+ gallons.

I have a 40 gallon system (30 gallon cube and 10 gallon sump) that I have a Reef Octopus NWB-110 on. You will find several members here on this forum that are more than happy with the skimmer's performance. It runs about $180 - but worth every penny. Performs at or near the same level of skimmers that cost far more.

Don't cheap out on your skimmer or you will be buying it two times.

I have a coralife 125 gal rated skimmer for my 55. Runs around for $189.99. I have had it for a few weeks so far and its been pulling out nasties that I can only cringe at. My water is extra clear now :)

Tunze is a great brand. A 9002 or 9005 model would work wonders.

I currently have as far as corals Dusters,Purple shrooms, elephant ear shroom, lobophyllia, ricordea, trumpets, favia, pavona, zoas. I would like to eventually encompass a good variety in the 90g build.

There are so many varieties of PS it confusing however im looking @ $200 budget what should i be looking for in a skimmer vortex ,pinwheel etc. The ones that do well according to reviews are really loud so I'm not sure.

    Any suggestions are welcome..

    Ty again crew

I personally cannot hear my Reef Octo NWB-110 over the return pump (mag 9) and overflow box.

You should look for lower wattage consumption (the ReefOcto is less than 20 watts!), also look for GATE VALVE on the outlet of the skimmer - the adjustment process can be quite tricky without one.

Thanks M-Ocean man i was also looking at a Coralife Super Skimmer - Venturi
Coralife/ESU. Is the Venturi down draft or something like that better? Starting at: $139.99

Also did you go with the Reef Octopus NWB 110 Needle Wheel Protein ?

Yup - reef octo NWB-110 Needle Wheel Skimmer - 2011 model. $180 @ my LFS. This is the model that comes with the Gate valve which is key for water level adjustments. It started pulling gunk out of the water in about 2-3 days.

The I-tech skimmer is amazing. Great performance, if you were willing to pay a little bit more, go for this skimmer. Is it for 40 gal or 90 gal? And the I-tech is pretty hard to get. If you want to read more about it click on the link: i-Tech Forums - Powered by vBulletin
