You already touched on the plumbing a sink and drain, have the electricians add a dedicated sub panel in the same area so you can create dedicated GFIC circuits easily if needed without fishing wire all through the already finished areas of the home :p

I would consider adding an air exchanger on the outside wall near the sink, it can be used to help control humidity levels in the area of the tanks.

put this in a wall in the great room, dinning rooms and formal living rooms don't get enough attention to make it worthwhile. Make sure the equipment room is wide enough so you can put a counter top or workbench on the wall opposite the tank and have adequate space to move around freely when doing tank maintenance tasks.

All in all it sounds like a great project, wish I could do something similar myself, but that will come a few years down the line :)

i would have to closet to keep extra buckets and what not... but by the sounds of it your going to have a basement with geothermal and should build a room where there is a 300g rubbermaid sump where you could have all your equipment. this will also elimnated all your noise you would have in your display area. in the basement you could have your sink and other things for water changes. this also means you can have bigger skimmers, pumps and whatnot. There is a person i know where my brother lives that did this and its the best tank system i have ever seen. like someone else said, i would drill the tank and do all your pluming before the Sheetrock goes up. keep us posted!

also make everything on its own curcit with its own GFI just in case and use 12-2 wire.

So many awesome ideas for the tank part of the project, but being an architectural designer - i have some questions from a designer's angle - especially since the tank room has to fit inside an actual home :)

Do you have a preferred style of home? ranch style? lodge style? cabin style? southwest style? If you have any pics of examples that appeal to you, i would enjoy seeing them :)

any idea on square footage? single story or two story?

try to determine what price range / budget you have as soon as you possibly can.

have you lined up a designer or builder yet or will you start with one of those "canned plans" from a book then modify it to suit your needs?

this will be an extremely exciting project for you - congratulations!

    Good thoughts here too.

In our current house, we don't use the dining room... well we do, it's my little girl's room. We eat at the "breakfast area" all the time. Having a big space just for a fancy table and to put dishes on display  We don't get it. We use that space for other things. So, I guess, what I mean is possibly putting it in the "breakfast area" as that's where we hang out.

Also, we don't watch TV too much and don't have one in the living room/"great room" or however it's being called. It's in the "game room" (the TV is). And I don't want the tank in there... But we do hang out quite a bit in our "formal living" (I think that just means a living room without a TV :)) and that's where I have my current 55. Oh decisions, decisions

    Thanks. Good info.

Wouldn't that be fun? Lots of folks in this development have built ponds - stocked even (FW, catfish and bass). I don't think I want to deal with that though. It would be really really cool and then I think I'd get bored with fishing in the same little hole and then it would just become a PITA to deal with.

And ponds draw cottonmouths and I don't want to deal with more of those than I have to ;)

Besides, there are 3 "lakes" in the development and it's bordered by creeks (I am outside the 100 year flood plain though, on a hill) and I always have neighbors I could go to...

I might do a tiny koi pond, but not one of these big ones you could actually swim in.

One little sentence got this fat response :) I type too much hehe
