I'm setting up a FO tank and I'm wondering if puffers and butterflys would get along ok.

it would depend on the type of puffers and the type of butterflies. Butterflies are very delicate eaters and puffers are very fast eaters. IMO most butterflies dont do well in home aquariums. I have a golden puffer and 2 triggers together (huma huma and niger) and the golden and huma is assertive vs the niger and we have to work to make sure the niger gets food

It would be a porcupine puffer and one of the easier butterflys to keep.

porcupine puffers are cool and usually do well with other fish. Again you woud want to make sure the butterfly is eating well when you get it

Awesome, I'll definitely be sure the butterfly is eating well before I bring it home.

I looped it into my reef tank, so it's not really a fish only system. My reef is a 30 gallon and the new FO tank is a drilled 40 breeder. I have about 100 lbs. of rock in the system, 4 refugiums, a cone skimmer rated for 250 gallons, and a fluidized sandbed denitrifier. It only made since to add more water and fish to the system:)

I got the system finished filled and stocked already! I went with the porcupine puffer and a sweet little burgess butterfly. So far they seem to get along great. The first day the puffer showed it's dominance, but didn't stand a chance of catching the butterfly. Now they don't leave each others sides. The burgess eats like a pig too!

lol I'll work on that if I ever get a day off again. I just fed the puffer a whole silverside by hand and was surprised to see the butterfly jump right in there with him to rip it apart directly from my fingers:) I tried the same thing in my reef tank and as soon as my fingers hit the water all fish vanished:(
