My kids are really interested in getting a puffer fish and I have to admit that after reading PufferGirl's thread, I'm more than a little interested myself. My question is, what puffers, if any, would be suitable to keep in a 40gal breeder tank (36" x 18" x 17")? I'd like to avoid something that's going to outgrow the tank and need to be given away.

Assuming I can find a puffer suitable for this tank, what would be some good tank mates?

a green spotted puffer would fit perfectly :D but you wuold have to start them as freshwater if their small then go through the whole brackish to marine stage

Here's a list of small puffers that will not out grow a 40gal..
    WHite spotted toby
    Saddled Toby (valentini puffer)
    Ambon toby
    Bennetti toby
    FInger Print Toby
    Crowned or threebarred toby
    Sharpnose Puffer or atlantic toby
    Ocellated, solanders or spotted toby

All these fish are in the Canthigaster family of fish...
and range from 3.5 inch to max 5.3inch

I personaly have the Valetini puffer and is a joy in my 24gal.. TONS of personality..!!

P.s thes are all Saltwater only fish not brackish...

    Best of Luck...

I'm not sure that I have that kind of patience. Actually the 40 is going to be plumbed into my reef tank, so this would pose some serious challenges.

K+ for the recomendations. Is there anything that would play nice / survive with any of these guys?

Did my 11 year old put you up to this?

Seriously, would these 2 be good tankmates who wouldn't outgrow a 40 gal?

FUzzy drawf lion gets about 6.7 inches long and min tank size for one is around 30gal... Its up to the Lion fish if a puffer is on his menu to eat or not... I have a fire fish, manderin gobie, and a perc clown in my tank and they all get along fine with my puffer.. there is a link to my current tank in my signature.. It's a older pic but will get updates soon....

    Best of luck....
