I'm looking at getting a porcupine puffer for my 90 once its running good and all my fish have survived. I've heard many things about puffer but my biggest worry is that they'll chew through cords and coral. Anyone have had this problem? Most of my equipment will be in my sump but I need to know for my power heads. List your experiences, problems, tips, mistakes and anything you can think of about puffers.

I've never heard of any puffer doing something like chewing a cord. I've heard of them pecking a coral to see what it is, but only a one time thing so I don't think that would be a problem. I guess I can see one reeking havoc if it's being starved or in a tiny tank but it should be ok in a 90.

He'll be a big bioload though. Puffers are very maneuverable but inefficient swimmers, and and very active ones too. I can see a porcupine easily eating a medium dinner shrimp a day. Also, say goodbye to any clean up crew you may have. You could maybe keep some giant turbos, but when he grows up he'll probably eat even the largest of turbo snails. Because of this you really will need a sump to help combat algae.

Your tank IMO is not big enough for a Porcupine Puffer.Minimum tank size 180 gallons. They grow to a foot in length and because of there swimming style/habits.They can also be very aggressive nipping tankmates and will definitely eat snail's,crabs,or shrimp.

I dont think the puffer is going to eat your cords, but they will eat everything else that is food. I took a puffer from a friend. He swore it didnt touch anything in his tank, but after a few days, it ate dozens of mushrooms that had been growing in my tank for years. Then it ate 2 softies the size of basketballs.

I feed mine freeze dried crawfish, Hikari Massivore pellets, silversides, clams and shrimps. They are massive eaters.

The store I go to keeps a full grown one a 155 gallon and the one I'm looking at is very smell. Do you guys believe that it's a shoot or miss with it eating corals. The store has never had a problem.
