I like to shoot for either 3-5x the DT volume or 10x the sump volume of flow to go through the sump.

Try to match the water flow through your skimmer and the flow through your sump at a 1/1 ratio

The 3-5x turnover is interesting. From what I research (articles and videos), they recommend 6-10 turnover in order for you to have a successful sump. Hmmmmmmmm....

Can you explain this? I am aiming towards 200 - 250g skimmer.

I'm running about 3.5 times turnover in my 180 Sps tank. You really don't want that much flow through your sump as you overflows will tend to get louder the more flow you push through them. You also tend to end up with a lot of micro bubbles with high flow sumps since the bubbles never really have time to rise with the fast moving water. Last is you want to give you skimmer a little time to clean the water before it gets back to your display.

Thanks kracer. And how long has your tank been running? also what pumps do you use. If I only need 3 - 5x turnover, that's even better ....so I can save more money. ;D

No problem, glad to help. Most of my flow is coming from powerheads within the tanks. My return is an eheim 1262, in the tank I have 2 mp40s and 3 hydor evo 1400s. The tank is still rather new as I just upgraded from my 90, but everything is doing really well.

Here are a few pics of the 180 to give you an idea of how it looks.

Very nice tank kracer. How long is "rather new tank"? livestocks look pretty healthy. Also, do you have refugium in the sump? is that the Octopus Diablo series protein skimmer?

The tank has been set up for around 3 months now. The sump is just 2 chambers, drain and return with a bubble trap in the center no fuge. My skimmer is an ATB Elegance 200. Everything was transferred from my 90 gal that was set up for about 5 years.

Find out how much water your skimmer pump processes each hour and try to match that up with how much flow you have through your sump

this will make your skimmer that much more efficient
