for a 55 you need a Mag 5 or 7 and if I read it correctly you can not use a siphon to get water from tank to sump or you will have a flood .

IMO, you need a bigger sump dude. I would go at least 15 gallons. I am running a 15 gallon tall for my 75 and it is not near big enough for me. I am going to upgrade myself to a twenty gallon long sump and a drilled out ten gallon standard on a platform for a fuge. If you have room underneath, I would get something bigger........I have a feeling you asking for trouble with a 5.5.

    Peace.......John.

Hey buddy you probably should get a little bigger sump and you definetly need to get a bigger pump. I am not an expert but I would think that anything under 20 gallons would not be sufficient.

the main reason i made it was to have a refuge for some chaeto. I may eventually go up to 15 gallon in 3-4months. As for the pump, i just got the rio 1700
    what kind of trouble? Overflow?

Exactly. If the power goes out, there is going to be some drainage. With a 5.5, the chances for overflow are quite high. Not only do you have to worry about what is in the pipes, but any levels above the overflow itself plus the return. I'll show you a pic of my 15g tall here to show you what I have. I still have reminder tape from the days when I had absolutely NO idea what I was doing.

Now, I have just got a sump. A 20g long is enough to have a small fuge and a sump, plus give you room for any overflow (into the sump, not onto the ground).

A 20g long at Petco costs $39.99 I think. Seriously, I would get rid of the 5.5 now and go 20.

And then you can turn the 5.5 into a nano!!!!

And as a side note. Anyone who reads this.....don't pay any attention to the Jebo skimmer you see. It does not exist. Yoooouuuuu doooooo nnooottt ssseeeeeeee itttttttt.::)

i was originally going to use a larger tank but it would not fit the space i have. I have gone through every possible overflow scenario and have made it so that it is impossible. I have had a hard time finding taller tanks around my area. How much does shipping run on something like a 20gallon tank?
