Probably 6mo ago my main pump in sump died.

1 mo ago pump for chiller died.

Now pump for my protein skimmer is dead.

All pumps were rio pumps and have heard these might not be the most reliable pumps.

Just annoyed, pumps were probably 2-3 yrs old

You're lucky- my RIOs only lasted a little over 1 year. OTOH, my old Maxi-Jets are 7 years old and still going strong.

Unfortunately I think you have already noticed the connection there. Pay peanuts get monkeys.

I use marineland, tbh I haven't had the greatest experience with them either, last about 2 years and just stopped, I was out of town so the mess was more than I would have liked (none would have been better) the DT siphoned back into the sump and over flowed, ordinarily my return outlet just broke the surface, but I had it pointed down to provide some addition water movement on my rocks. ( I certainly moved the water 6 inches down my tank ! And siphoned it onto the floor). At least I didn't lose anything, but my downstairs neighbour still won't speak to me.

I'm sure Ryan meant no offense; just the Australian way of saying "you get what you pay for". This is true for most everything in this hobby (as well as in life in general), and RIO is and always has been one of the cheapest pumps on the market. (Bear in mind, I, too, learned the hard way. :))

Was that their new model? Can't say I've heard anything good about them, yet. The original Maxi-Jets are still available under a different name (which seems to always escape my mind, unfortunately... :-/).

Colbolt Aquatics makes the "original" maxi-jets now.
They really are much more well built than the new maxi-jets which pretty much suck.

Sorry mate. Didn't mean to offend you.

I just meant sometimes you have to pay a little bit extra money on better equipment so it lasts you a long time and saves you hassle. Of course everyone is tight on money, I know I am a student, but sometimes if thats the case its good to stage things.

I like I first set up the tank with the basics and have expanded out. I started with crappy old powerheads which have been finally replaced with MP10's, and now I am looking at moving into dosing. Small steps are easiest.
