What has been said is true, but it does not hurt a pump to throttle it. Based on the numbers you do not have to throttle it that much... Half??? I one inch drain can easily handle a Mag 7. Mine handled my 9.5.

My question would be what is wrong with your drain? What do you have connected to it, how does it drain, is the bulkhead clear... ???

And I would have to look it up but I thought a 1" could handle 600 gph.... or is that 1.25"? I'm pretty sure my 90g had a 3/4 and 1" and it could do 600 fine.

Yep... I keep coming up with 600 gph on a 1"

From what I could tell it was clear. I never had a problem before with my other pump that was pretty equivalent to a mag 7. and I only had a wet/dry before, even smaller than my refuge. I will take apart my overflow and check it out. I have a flex hose connected to the drain line.

Just check that it is clear and nothing clogging any of the grates for the overflow or pipe. That the flex hose is clear and straight with no kinks. Sounds like you have but just be sure. there should be no reason that overflow can't handle a Mag 7... and even if you had to throttle it it should not be much or drastic.

That is what I recall. I know in my 55 right now the 2 1" drains I installed have no trouble keeping up with my Mag12.
