Just wanted to say thanks ahead of time.

I have a newer 125g w/25g sump, still only 2-3 weeks old but was seeded with bottled bacteria (2 doses), about 20lbs of live rock rubble from LFS and a few additional pieces of live rock spread throughout the tank. Got a small group of BG Chromies, 1 purple and 1 regular fire fish and I got a small cleanup crew a few days ago due to a small amount of algae showing. Also have a few hardy soft corals, leather, Kenya tree, Xenia, mushroom and that’s it. Ammonia has never been above 0, neither has Nitrite, Nitrate is at normal levels 5ish ppm. I have a nice set of coralife T5 coral fixture on top, a wet/dry with rubble instead of bio balls and plenty of flow through the tank, or I did. That is my problem…

Last night as I was adding another small frag, I heard a pop and my Iwaki started to smell like it was burning, doh….
Anyways it’s shot and I was without any flow/filtration. In my sump (with the rubble) I kept on my skimmer pump but no air, just to flow water around in the sump. I put two small emergency powerheads in the DT to have some sort of circulation, but it’s not much. I already found a replacement pump on craigslist but I won’t be able to get it installed till after work today, so that’s nearly 24 hours that the tank hasn’t had major flow/filtration, just the small powerheads moving water around.

    So my question…

    1. Is my tank going to be ok? I realize I cheated the cycle process a bit by seeding with a bunch of live rock/rubble and a great named brand bottle bacteria and shouldn’t have the live stock I have now, but the tank was showing to be perfectly fine up until now. Do I need to run home during lunch break and do anything to the tank? Are my fish/corals going to be ok for this short duration with no real flow/filtration through the sump? I did turn the light on as normal this morning.
    2. Is the Little Giant Pump model 4-MDQX-SC a good pump? I found one on craigslist for $85 used but apparently in new condition. I know it’s not or may not match the quality of my Iwaki (after all it’s been running for 15+ years) but I have read some good reviews online.

Thanks in advance, really worried about my system and your thoughts on the little giant pump.

    Thank you

There is also a reeflow dart pump for 225, but i think that is overkill for my system. I had my iwaki turned back to about 75% total anyways (around 800-900 GPH)

Make sure the surface of the water is rippling for proper gas exchange. Turn on the lights to keep the pH up. You should be fine.

    Its Ok

To me with that amount of water and at least some circulation you shouldnt have to worry over 24 hours . If you wanna send me a link to scope out that pump for you i will but generally i just look at the power of the pump . Buying used you may not get any warranty, im not sure though just something to look at ...how powerful is that T5 fixture you have ? Is your tank the high 125g or the long 125g?

it's a 125 long. Yea pump looked to be in the average of the middle tier of pumps, only negative things i found was noise and heat. Here is a link to it on marineland
    It's model 4-MDQX-SC

I figured the tank would be ok, i do live in south florida so i should have a Hurricane Strategy anyways. Guess i need to do some research in case power does become an issue for extended periods of time.

the two powerheads i have are not pointing at the surface and it's rather calm to be honest, should i run home during lunch and point one of the powerheads at the surface or they will be ok for another 8ish hours?

    Thanks again everyone, much appreciated.

If your tank was fully stocked at this point, I would say run home. However, with those few fish in a 125, you shouldn't have any DO (Dissolved Oxygen) issues so don't worry about it.

    on your lunch

If your an open top tank i dont think youll have a problem with Ph swings . You should be able to take your time . If you wana do anything ion your lunch you may wana point them to the surface (i would ) or add an airstone or something , i have heard about those gas exchanges causing weird things to happen but i havent researched it alot . in my past experience 24 hours without power is not to bad typically . You can look into little generators and pumps that run off batteries that will keep an airstone going in case of power outage . I wouldnt worry if i were you though. i really do think that this pump will be fine though , sometimes just the vibration of pumps cause the noise . So any way to secure it the tightest will help along with any PVC or tubing brackets
