So here is my dilema. I have an RO/DI system in the basement, which goes to a resevoir that I mix salt in (next to the RO/DI in the basement as well). I need to set up an automatic top off for going away for at least a week - and also to reduce carrying buckets. While I am away, I won't mix in salt so it is just topping off with RO water.

My issue: What kind of pump do I use to pump the water upstairs? I have a spare Mag 7 and mag 9.5 - but:

    a) probably not enough head pressure even on the 9.5 right (12 feet of head - maybe 30 feet horizontal distance as well)
    b) how can you reduce the tubing to 1/4 O/D to run through the walls without causing a lot of back pressure on the pump?
    c) I would need to run electrical wiring from an electric float switch in my sump downstairs to the mag pump submersed in my resevoir wouldn't I? Or should I have the pump upstairs submersed in my aquarium sump, and run a long feeder line to suck the water from the resevoir - so sucking rather than pushing the water?
    d) what pump should I consider for this project assuming the mag 9.5 can't do the job?

Need this set up before the 20th, but I suppose I could just fill a bucket on a stand and run it to a cheap float switch for top offs while Im gone, just making sure that there is enough capacity in the sump to handle a failure of some sort.

New member to the boards - looking for any advice you can provide! Thanks.

I use a Spectrapure UPLC II myself. The sensor is placed in my sump and draws water from a reservoir in my garage 35+ feet away via its persitaltic pump which either push or suck water up to like 45 psi or 120+ feet of head.
All I had to do was run the 1/4" water line from the garage to the sump, no power back to the ATO reservoir is required since it is fed directly from the RO/DI via float switches and a solenoid valve.

Not cheap but it has multiple levels of safety and redundancy so is bulletproof.

So the UPLC II comes with the pumps (says 6 liter pump) correct? i.e you don't have a booster pump as well? My resevoir is being fed directly by a ro/di with a float switch - so the ro/di would not be directly connected to this unit. Could I just drop a line in the resevoir and run it up to this pump (sitting by the tank/sump upstairs), and it would just be operated by the float switch in the sump that comes with this unit?

That pretty much sums it up. The UPLC uses the same peristaltic pump as the LiterMeter III and that pump is capable of both lifting water or pushing water and since it is a 3 roller pump it does not require a check valve.

The UPC level sensor is a solid state optical or pressure switch connected by tubing and a small diameter clear tube which can be adjusted anywhere between 1/10" and 4" differential so you can set you level your self at the touch of a button.

I have been extremely pleased with mine and have had it about 3 years now.

Thanks for the suggestions - looks like a great unit, but after doing some research I think I am going to get a reefkeeper, digital aquatics float switch, and a BRS top off doser. Nice thing is I can then expand with the other modules and have everything controlled over the net later on if needed.

I have the Reefkeeper Lite and love it.
