Personally, my vote is for the gate valve. For those who don't know what the bloody heck we are talking about, go into your backyard and find the water hose. You know the thingy you turn that releases water into the garden hose? That's a gate valve. Some people call them water spickets or what have you.

With a gate valve, you have good flow control, and less restrictions. It's a comprimise between the globe and ball valve.

The new dimmers cut in and out when you reach a certain point on a single polarity - AC current has two polarities that alternate back and forth, dimmer switches cut out one of the polarities so that you only get a certain amount of the available electrical wave.

The old dimmers used simply transferred some of the current to a resistor within the switch. These are those turn knob dimmers

At any rate, i think limiting a pump beyond maybe 90% is a poor choice. Think of a truck, although it may not be moving as fast, when it's loaded with resistance (weight) it works harder. I don't like spending money I don't have to...

Regarding the gate valve and globe valve, they are the best option for this - Ball valves can be decent, but in my experience, those Schedule 40 and 80 ball valves are a PITA to turn.

not all water faucets (really called hose bibs) are gate valves. just thought I would let you know.

Oops my bad. I assumed they were all gates.

EDIT: I stand corrected again. Thanks Tangster...I guess I gotta shut up now :) I though I knew what I was talking about, but mechanical drawing class can only teach so much. :hehe:

My vote is still for the gate valve, however. Just ignore the hole house part. The handles look the same anyways. ;D

The hose end boiler drain or and or a sill cock , hose bibs aka spigot valve that is mounted on a house to connect a garden hose to is a Globe type valve .. Plastic gates are expensive but give totally 100% flow rates unlike a ball valve.

    This is a globe valve:

The flow has to change direction resulting in more friction loss.

    This is a gate valve.

The gate moves out of the way to allow straight flow. Not as good flow control as a globe, but much better than a ball.
